Nestled in San Felice, minutes north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern Chianti Classico zone, Podere Le Boncie embodies the dedication of Giovanna Morganti. She has been recognized as one of the best of the new generation of Tuscan winemakers.
Giovanna's oenological journey began in the mid-1980s when she spearheaded a project planting 300 traditional Tuscan grape varietals. Upon receiving a small farm named Le Boncie from her father, she planted a vineyard with Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda Mammolo, and Prugnolo – the favorites grapes from the experimental project.
The production at Le Boncie, which began in 1990 with the first vintage, has always sought to distinguish itself from the mass agricultural and winemaking trends of the region. Giovanna focuses on environmentally friendly production from a mere 4 hectares of land that draws strength from nature and its health.
There are two labels created by Le Boncie: Le Trame and Il 5. Some of the finest and most complex interpretations of classic Sangiovese. Giovanna's wines are the pure expression of her vineyards and of the great passion and dedication that led her to dedicate her life to viticulture in her land of origin.

Giovanna Morganti and Giorgio Serao turned out a stellar set of wines that will go down as some of their finest ever. The small, intimate scale here is decidedly artisan, very much like similar estates in Burgundy, Piedmont and other regions. “We follow a practical approach to organic viticulture that attempts to be adaptive to a world that is constantly changing, an approach that is more about asking questions than following rigid protocols,” Morganti and Serao explained as we walked through the vineyards on the eve of the 2023 harvest. The influences – Gianfranco Soldera and Beppe Rinaldi among them – are evident. Readers who want to explore Sangiovese at its finest must put Le Boncie at the top of their lists.
