Cuvée 745 NV, 75cl

2017, the harvest from Ay, Dizy, Hautvillers (66%) Avize and Oiry (34%). Winter and Spring were exceptionally dry; the beginning of Spring was mild but, in April, destructive frosts ravaged the vineyards, especially in the Côte des Blancs. Temperatures then rose and the weather was good until July. The end of the growing season was hot but very wet. The...

Vieille Vigne Extra Brut Grand Cru NV, 75cl

A wonderful champagne, 100% Chardonnay of Avize from vineyards more than 60 years old. A base of citrus fruit melted with the scent, and taste, of a custard where there are also two drops of lemon juice. Delicious and enjoyable.

Carbonaione 2019, 75cl

The 2019 Il Carbonaione is silky and racy in the glass. Scents of new oak are a clear sign the 2019 doesn't quite have the density of the very best years, but Il Carbonaione has a brilliant track record of aging.

Carbonaione 2018, 75cl

The 2018 Il Carbonaione is one of the most elegant editions of this flagship wine I can remember tasting. Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000, 75cl

Pauillac
Pauillac

The 2000 Lafite-Rothschild is deep in color. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and mint, still quite closed but very focused. There is a lot of power here, but maybe not the same level of elegance as other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, firm grip, very nicely judged acidity and good density on the finish.

Chateau Laville Haut Brion 2006, 75cl

Laville Haut-Brion is arguably the greatest dry white wine in Bordeaux. Aromatically complex on the nose and almost lusciously rich on the palate, with strong mineral overtones, and with a finish to die for.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996, 75cl

The 1996 Lafite has an intense bouquet with blackberry, cedar and a pencil box of graphite. There are those fine but rigid tannins that lend this Lafite such beguiling symmetry, copious cedar and graphite with vein of brine and oyster shell.

Chateau Petrus 2014, 75cl

The 2014 Petrus has a bouquet that storms from the glass with exotic red cherries, blood orange, strawberry tart and cedar scents, only calming down after several minutes. Rich and opulent – although they are not facets of a truly great Petrus to me.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2001, 75cl

The 2001 Lafite is a damn impressive follow-up to the 2000. It has a healthy garnet core, showing little sign of maturity. The bouquet offers blackberry, melted tar, cedar, and pinch of dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins and a mélange of red and black fruit.

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou 2009, 150cl

The 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a killer bouquet with wonderful definition: blackberry, wild hedgerow, minerals and touches of pressed flower. This has just lost some of its puppy fat in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, taut and quite linear, lightly spiced with a firm grip but plenty of elegance towards the finish. This is...

Chateau Pontet Canet 2018, 75cl

When I tasted the 2018 Pontet-Canet in barrel I described it as a "freak of nature." The 2018 is more than that, it is a freak of nature. Made from yields of just ten hectoliters per hectare, the 2018 possesses off the charts richness, phenomenal balance and head-spinning intensity. Put in another way, if Lalou Bize-Leroy made Bordeaux, it would taste...

Chateau La Dominique 2014, 75cl

According to the owners, 'La Dominique 2014 restores the maturity and concentration of good vintages, while retaining a beautiful freshness and silky tannic texture'. The freshness and structure built with silky but taut tannins (giving a straight wine) are reflections of the perfect ripeness of this grape variety. A great Saint-Émilion Grand Cru classé!
