Subtly complex aromas of lemon ice, mint and nutty, spicy oak. Rich, sweet and chewy, with a powerful minerality giving it great penetration for the vintage. This boasts wonderful inner-mouth perfume. Less obviously ripe than the young 2002 but possesses terrific lurking sweetness. Finishes very long, with notes of oatmeal and vanillin oak.

The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins.

End of the coteaux of Nuits, the last vineyard before Vosne-Romanée. Picked later than others, The Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru needs some coaxing from the glass, revealing blackberry and hints of blue fruit lending some “light” with time.
