The 2017 Barolo Le Vigne is rich, pliant and so expressive. Even so, I imagine it will need a few years to open up fully. Bright red fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its distinctly red-toned profile.

The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a dark, powerful wine. A huge swath of tannins gives the Brunate its feeling of gravitas. Dark cherry fruit, lavender, sage, licorice, spice and earthy notes build into a crescendo of aromas and flavors that is just captivating.

Scavino’s 2013 Barolo is a fresh, inviting wine that captures the mid-weight style of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry, anise, mint, blood orange and exotic spice notes are laced into the super-appealing finish.

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is another huge, tannic wine. Crystalline and so precise, the 2013 is deceptive, as the aromatics are quite inviting, until masses of tannin hit the palate. Tar, rose petal, spice and cedar open with a bit of time in the glass, showing just enough to make the wine pleasurable today. Even so, the best is clearly yet to come.

The 2020 Barolo Ravera di Monforte is a powerful, beguiling wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and scorched earth confer somber intensity that is matched by the wine's depth and tannic heft. This wild, savory Barolo is going to need a few years to come into its own.

The 1982 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is laced with sweet red cherries, freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and pine. This is an especially polished, refined San Lorenzo that emphasizes finesse over the power that is more typical of this site, although there is no shortage of tannin. With air, the 1982 keeps getting better and better.

Conterno's 2016 Barbera d'Alba Francia is a wine of extreme finesse and nuance. It is also dark, inward and mysterious in that it is nowhere near ready to show all of its cards. The Francia nuances will develop with a few more years in bottle.
