Good medium red. Crushed cherry, raspberry, rose petal and botanical herbs on the tangy nose and palate. If the Santo Stefano is a more masculine, underbrushy style of nebbiolo, this one is a perfume bomb in the mouth, incredibly silky and fine-grained but with outstanding sappy tang to leaven its thickness.

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is powerful, intense and very much wound up. Then again, we are talking about Montefico. The 2015 is going to need at least a few years to be at its best.

Bartolo Mascarello’s 1985 Barolo is fabulous. This is one of the better 1985 in Barolo. Most other examples have shown some signs of tiring, but this wine is fresh, powerful and absolutely gorgeous.
