The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is another huge, tannic wine. Crystalline and so precise, the 2013 is deceptive, as the aromatics are quite inviting, until masses of tannin hit the palate. Tar, rose petal, spice and cedar open with a bit of time in the glass, showing just enough to make the wine pleasurable today. Even so, the best is clearly yet to come.

The 1998 Barolo Cascina Francia from Giacomo Conterno is delicate, layered and perfumed, showing gorgeous finesse and lovely inner tension in its fruit. Overall this is a soft, accessible Cascina Francia that is drinking beautifully today and should last for at least another decade.

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Francia is ravishingly beautiful. Silky, sensual and impeccably polished, with tremendous palate presence. The richness of the warm, dry year is very much in evidence, and yet the wine is superb.

The 2019 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru offers blackberry, briar, crushed iris flower and a light marine influence; this is just beautiful. The palate is silky in texture with spine-tingling acidity and good cohesion, gently building in the mouth toward a saline finish that fans out wondrously.

Our third flight kicks off with the 1999 Solaia. Still a powerhouse, the 1999 packs a serious punch. Dark macerated cherry, espresso, chocolate, licorice and blackberry jam infuse the 1999 with so much character.
